May 16, 2020 online worship link here.

Dear Park Avenue family,

We have made it through another week … and it’s time for another online  “Sunday Worship Video” from the ad hoc video production team at Park Avenue Church, plus some news to help keep us all in the loop. Click here for the link …

You’ll be excited to see the Gospel Choir and Praise Team make a VIRTUAL appearance! If you close your eyes and listen to “Glorify the Lord” (recorded in the Sanctuary at a safe social distance) and use your imagination to fill in the full line-up of musicians and the congregation worshiping from the pews, it’s ALMOST like being at Park just a few months ago.

ALMOST – but not quite. The restrictions may be loosening up, but it will still be awhile before things are back the way they used to be. A Reopening Team has formed to giving recommendations for how and when to open the church building for ministry, services and our tenants. Research and plans are being developed by a small work group of members experienced in professional building management and health care.

When recommendations are finalized, the Administrative Board will  review and approve their implementation. More information will be forthcoming, but we do know that masks will be a part of the recommendations. In order to fill the need for cloth masks, it would be helpful for volunteers to begin sewing masks to donate. If you have interest in providing masks, contact info@parkavechurch.org to be put in touch with that team.

When you watch the online service, please also be aware of a couple of announcements made by Minister of Congregational Care Linda Tate regarding important events in the lives of our members. And at the end – don’t miss a Zoom-recorded message from Otis Bennett and Louis Smith as they give us a heads-up about next Sunday’s “Drive-By Greet & Go”  … a way for us all to safely meet our new Senior Pastor, Rev. Gregg Louis Taylor. Mark your calendar to arrive between 10-11am next Sunday in our parking lot, and watch for more details to come.

Pastor Gregg will be journeying solo to Minnesota in a few days to join us; his family will join later in the summer. Be sure to send him “traveling mercies”… prayers made for someone about to undertake a big journey. And be sure to check out his sermon this week … not to be missed!

A reminder that if you’d like to join the Early Risers service on Sunday mornings, it’s available via Zoom. Contact them now via email parkavechurcher@gmail.com to get the link and passcode so you’ll be set as they meet from 8-9am on Sunday mornings. This week’s guest speaker is Ad Board Chair Jon Urban, who will be speaking on the topic “The Cycle of Life: Gardens in the Bible”  from John 15:1.

Our other ministries are active as well … if you’re interested in knowing what is available, contact the church office info@parkavechurch.org and we’ll get you hooked up.

And as always, we have an active prayer ministry ready and waiting to pray for and WITH you. Our Minister of Congregational Care Linda Tate would love to hear from you if you have a personal need or prayer concern. She can be reached by email at lindatate@parkavechurch.org or leave a message with a phone number at the church office 612-825-6863 and she will return the call.

I’m closing with a quote I heard this week from author Anne Lamott  –

“The opposite of faith is not doubt, but certainty.
Certainty is missing the point entirely.
Faith includes noticing the mess, the emptiness and discomfort,
and letting it be there until some light returns.

We know the Light has never left … until we meet again!

May 10  online worship link

Hello, Park Avenue Family!

A few days of excellent weather earlier this week may have done wonders for our mood, but it still can’t replace being together on Sunday mornings in person. Please continue to pray for this situation to be resolved very soon! In the meantime, be assured that Park Avenue Church, like God, is still active and at work.

Mother’s Day is “Hat Sunday”  Even though we won’t be together in person, we’ve put together a photo collection of “hats past and present” that will open up our online worship this week. Watch it here, or  …

Join us on Facebook to “watch” the service together as a congregation at 12:30pm* Sunday afternoon, and interact through the comments.  Pastor Gregg and Youth Minister Darelle will be on hand to greet you, answer questions, and just be in worship together. The Description box under the video will function as our “bulletin” so you can see what’s coming up, and who is participating in the service.

And to see each other live and in person, join Early Risers Online Worship Service 8-9am each Sunday morning. Email the Early Risers parkavechurcher@gmail.com for the Zoom link and passcode to enter the worship meeting.  This week’s guest speaker is our Minister of Congregational Care, Linda Tate.

*In order not to overlap with Early Risers
and Children’s & Youth Worship,
we are moving our online video Facebook premier time
to 12:30pm on Sundays
Curious what Park Avenue programs are up to? Many of our ministries have moved to online programming and they would love to have you participate. And of course, our Prayer and Care Circle is always busy. Contact me at info@parkavechurch.org if you’re looking for other ways to get involved or would like to be put in touch with our prayer team. There’s also a committee forming that is looking at safe ways for us to gather in the near future

Have you met Pastor Gregg yet? … Even though he’s still in Texas until later this month, he’d like to meet everyone via Zoom and has set up online sessions where you can “drop by” and say hello.  He’ll be hosting Sunday through Wednesday evenings this week …

VIRTUAL COFFEE WITH PASTOR GREGG
May 10-13 from 6:30-7:30pm

and we can arrange a phone or email conversation.

And giving is so important during this time. Mailing a check to the church is always a great way to give, but giving online will save a stamp and definitely help the Finance team as they make projections for an uncertain future.

Getting weird emails or social media requests from someone posing as Gregg Taylor (or other Park Avenue staff) and asking for money, to give them a call, etc? These are NOT legitimate requests and are part of a phishing scam. Any emails from Park Avenue pastors or staff will use the @parkavechurch.org  address. Please mark anything like this as Junk or Spam and do not respond or forward.

May 3rd, 2020: Online Worship Link

May 2, 2020

Hello, Park Avenue Family!

It’s been a wild ride the last few months. As a staff member, I can say for certain that we have met the challenge that God has given us during this time – to stay strong as a church, to support each other and our community, and to move ahead with our work.

We have said goodbye to three much-loved pastors in a very short time, but now God has called Pastor Gregg Taylor to lead us into our next chapter. Gregg officially started on May 1st as our new Senior Pastor. The staff and a number of leadership folks have already had the pleasure of meeting and working with him virtually from his home in Texas, so he has hit the ground running. Pastor Gregg will be joining us in Minnesota before the end of the month, and wife Amy, son Campbell, daughter Mallory, and dog Puffin will be moving here later in the summer.

We continue to refine our online worship presence, so be sure to join us for our “Sunday Service”. Be sure to set aside a half-hour to relax and worship together apart with us. And check the Description box under the video – it will function as our “bulletin” so you can see what’s coming up and who those faces are you see on the screen.

A couple of action items for all of you this week …
Virtual Coffee with Pastor Gregg … he’d like to meet everyone via Zoom and has set up afternoon and evening sessions where you can drop by and say hello.  He’ll be hosting during these times …

Next Sunday is Mother’s Day, and Mother’s Day is “Hat Sunday” Even though we won’t be together in person, we’d like to feature a photo collection of our family wearing their finest ”chapeau” during our May 10th online worship service. Email a photo to info@parkavechurch.org before May 6. Kids welcome to participate, too!

Do you enjoy seeing familiar faces in Online Worship? Everyone would love to see YOUR face, too! I’m the one who rounds up participants and edits the video montages during The Lord’s Prayer and “I Can Do …” segments, and it would bless me to have a number of new faces shown every week. Reply to this email, and I’ll let you know the details. It’s easy to record yourself or I’d be happy to meet up to record it myself (with safe social distancing, of course!).

And giving is so important during this time. You probably received the Quarterly Financial Update email from our Finance Team; they have been working very diligently and creatively to make sure our ministry continues. Here’s an excerpt from their message.

Some of you are unemployed, have taken pay reductions,
or may find yourself without a job in the near future, so it is with sensitivity and gentleness that we ask each of you to consider your ability to increase your giving.

Please examine your situation and ask God for guidance.
If you can give $10 or 10% more each week (our 10/10 program),
you will help maintain current staffing for the ministries we all love and support.
Here’s information on how to take part …

April 25, 2020

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

It is with a mix of emotions that I write to all of you. I am deeply saddened that Kathy and my time with you is coming to a close. It has been a blessing to serve as your pastor during this brief interim, and I am sorry for many reasons that our time to share in face-to-face worship and fellowship was cut so very short. Thank you for the grace, friendship and love that you have shown Kathy and me, we will miss you.

I do, however, celebrate, with great expectation, the next steps in your shared journey with Pastor Gregg Taylor and his family. You truly are a beautiful representation of the body of Christ. God’s Spirit is drawing you to live even more deeply into all that that means, especially as you learn to embrace and celebrate the diversity that is God’s beloved people. I am sorry that some of the work we began was cut short by the coronavirus, but together, with Pastor Gregg, you are ready to move forward in this difficult but faithful work.

So long as you remember and hold Christ as central to all that you do, and live out his call to, above all else, love one another as he has loved you, there is truly nothing that you cannot accomplish. Right now, my friends, the Church and the broader community need this from you.

As Pastor Gregg begins his journey of ministry with you during this time of sheltering in place, I hope that you will take the opportunity to meet and warmly welcome him by joining one of his upcoming “Virtual Coffee” sessions. I know that he is looking forward to being with you, and that his gifts for ministry and leadership among you will be a blessing.

Please join in this Sunday’s online worship by clicking here. Or reach out to info@parkavechurch.org if you have prayer concerns or have additional questions.

Please remember the importance of continuing to give* in response to God’s grace and in support of the ministries of Park Avenue Church. It is only by your faithful giving that the ministry of Christ’s Church is made possible. If you have not yet signed up to give online, I would encourage you to check it out. It can be an easy way to give regularly, especially during this time of social distancing. To sign up, or to get information, click here.

Finally, I want to give thanks to God for the wonderful people I have been privileged to work with these past months. I hope you know what a gifted and passionate ministry team you have. In my years of ministry, I do not believe that I have served with a more gracious, committed, passionate and gifted group of people.

When COVID 19 made our usual ways of being the church together impossible, they shifted gears, offered their gifts in new ways, and graciously continued to serve all of us, because that is what they do and who they are. You are blessed to have each of them serving with you. Please take a moment to let them know how much you appreciate them.

On behalf of Kathy and myself, God’s blessings, dear friends. Our lives are richer for having walked among you. We will continue to hold you in our prayers. May the peace of Christ be with you all.

Yours in Christ’s love,
Pastor Kevin

April 18, 2020

Dear Park Avenue Church,

Grace and peace to all of you. I pray that this message finds you well. Please know that I and our ministry team hold all of you in prayers.

During this time of sheltering in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, worship and ministry continue at and through the church, as we all are finding new ways to reach out and find community together. I hope that you are finding the online worship, Bible studies, Wednesday prayer gathering, children and youth programs and activities, and other postings meaningful, until that time that Christ’s Church can again gather face-to-face.

Although the church office and building are closed, please know that our care and benevolence ministries are here to respond to needs for prayer and assistance, especially during this time. If you have need, perhaps due to loss of employment, illness, or other life issues, the church is here for you. Please contact our minister of Congregational Care by emailing lindatate@parkavechurch.org.

March 27, 2020

Before the mountains were brought forth,
or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.    Psalm 90:2

My Dear Friends,

If these past few weeks have shown us anything, it is that change is certain. But even more certain than change are the grace and constancy of our God.

As you are aware, our most recent change is the statewide shelter in place order issued by the governor through April 10. At the same time, Bishop Ough has requested that all United Methodist churches in Minnesota suspend all public gatherings, including worship, until May 10.

Please take a moment to read Bishop Ough’s message

Thre will be no in-person worship at Park Avenue Church through April 10, and likely longer as the CDC currently recommends to avoid gatherings of 50 people or more until at least May 10.

Together, we are all learning new ways to live and to be in community with each other in our new reality as the COVID-19 pandemic impacts all aspects of our lives. Following the best medical advice to keep one another safe, and to do what we can to help limit or slow the spread of this virus, we are trying to learn how to care for one another without being together in the same place. Especially at this time, we need to not lose touch with each other. This means all of us being intentional about connecting with and caring for one another in new ways.

In the past three weeks, I have been involved in more Zoom meetings and online discussions than in the past three years. Holding Bible studies and fellowship gatherings in virtual chatrooms, tuning into Facebook rather than gathering in the sanctuary to worship, and not being able to visit face-to-face in times of need, all challenge the ways that we have understood what it means to be the Church. And yet we know that being the Church of Jesus Christ has never been about a place. It is about being a people who seek faithfully to follow our Lord in all times, places, and conditions. I want to thank all of you, and particularly our ministry staff and leadership who have been working very hard to respond and develop new ways of doing ministry in these challenging times.

Worship and Bible Study

We are exploring ideas for online worship. Video messages will be available periodically; please keep in touch via our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ParkAveChurchMpls for information as to when we will be available for live worship.

Children’s Church will be live-streamed at 10:30am each Sunday morning (contact Minister Patsy patsysemkoff@parkavechurch.org for more information and link) and Youth Worship is held at 11:00am Sunday mornings (contact Minister Darelle for more information and link at darellewilliams@parkavechurch.org).

I am starting a new online Bible study based on the scripture text for the scheduled sermon each Sunday and during Holy Week. This will be hosted as a Facebook Group  and anyone who would like to participate is invited to join here . Read the scripture, look over the questions provided, and add your answers and see the thoughts and responses of others.

Some ongoing small groups have started meeting online. Contact either the class leader or the church office at info@parkavechurch.org for information on how to connect.

Pastoral & Congregational Care

We are working now to create Caring Circles. Caring Circle leaders will be calling regularly  to check in on everyone who is a part of our Park Avenue Church family.  They will be calling to see how you are doing, ask if you have any prayer requests for  you and your family, and if there are any needs that your church family can help with (groceries, tech support in how to connect with our online services, etc ).

If you are in need of pastoral care, or you are able to help with needs of others, please let your Call Circle leader know, or contact Pastor Kevin Schill at kevinschill@parkavechurch.org, or Linda Tate, Minister of Congregational Care at lindatate@parkavechurch.org.

Church Office and Building

The church office will be closed beginning Saturday, March 28 until further notice. Our staff will primarily be working remotely. Each will be continuing their ministry role, so please do not hesitate to be in contact by email or phone. If you need to make a contact and do not have individual contact information send email to info@parkavechurch.org .

The building is closed for all gatherings and meetings until further notice. Our custodial staff are working on extra cleaning and building maintenance to keep the building as safe and clean as possible.

I give thanks for the privilege of being your pastor during this interim time, a time of change and transition in so many ways. In the midst of all that is happening in response to the COVID-19 virus, you are preparing to receive your new pastor, Pastor Gregg Taylor and his family to be in ministry among you. Through all of this, God is faithful and will show the way. Ours is to continue to find ways to reach out to each other and our neighbors to share caring and love. Because that, my friends, is what it truly means to be the Church of Jesus Christ, wherever we are.

God’s Peace,

Pastor Kevin Schill
