Congregational Discernment Sessions

Congregational Discernment Sessions:
United Methodist Doctrine on Homosexuality and Sexual Identity

The Park Avenue United Methodist Church will host two identical three-week discernment sessions on United Methodist doctrine on homosexuality and sexual identity.  The objectives of the sessions are to:

  1. Study the existing United Methodist doctrine, proposed changes to this doctrine, and relevant scripture on homosexuality
  2. Equip the congregation to faithfully discern, as disciples of Jesus Christ, how best to carry out the PAUMC vision

These sessions will be structured as small group discussions, facilitated under principles of Holy Conferencing.  Discussions will work through an excerpt from the book Methodists Divided: Understanding our Differences over Homosexuality by Reverend Dale McConkey.  This text explains traditionalist and progressive positions on homosexuality and sexual identity through the lens of scripture, tradition, reason, and experience (the Wesley quadrilateral).
