Faith & Fake News

By January 30, 2025No Comments

We live in a world flooded with headlines, hashtags, and constant commentary. It’s easy to get caught up in the noise of “fake news.” But did you know there’s “fake news” when it comes to faith, too?

Over the years, many of us have picked up ideas about Jesus—things we assume he said, but didn’t. Some of these misquotes are harmless. Others, though, have weighed us down, distorted our faith, and even wounded us. I get it. And I know I’m not alone in that.

That’s why I hope you’ll join me for a new six-week sermon series called Faith & Fake News: 5 Things Jesus Did Not Say—and What He Did. It runs from February 2 – March 2, Sunday mornings, 10 a.m. at Park Avenue Church. Together, we’ll work to clear up some misunderstandings about what Jesus did not say—and discover the truth of what he actually did.

If you’re like me, and you’ve sometimes felt like the Jesus you read about in Scripture seems different from the one you’ve been told about… if you’ve wrestled with teachings that don’t seem to reflect the love and grace of God… or if you’re simply curious about deepening your faith, this series is for you.

Each Sunday, we’ll take a closer look at one statement Jesus never actually said—phrases that have been passed down, assumed, or taken out of context—or spiritual sentiments Jesus never expressed. We’ll compare them to what Jesus did say, and in doing so, we may find that his message is even more surprising, freeing, and life-giving than we imagined.

I’d love for you to be part of this conversation. Come with an open heart, bring your questions, and let’s listen together. We might even hear Jesus’ words again for the first time.

Much love,

Pastor Gregg
