In the Letter to the Hebrews, the risen Jesus is seen as the eternal High Priest who lives forever to minister to God on behalf of people. Jesus is different than all the other priests before him because he lives on, and his priestly work on behalf of others continues. As the writer says, “he always lives to make intercession for them” (Heb. 7:23-25).
Based on this insight and promise, some have suggested we might see Christ as “our eternal prayer partner” or “cosmic prayer partner.” And when we pray for others or ourselves, we can join in with the prayer Jesus is already praying.
Here’s a simple way to pray in this way, which I have found helpful, especially when feeling led to pray for people or situations and wanting to align my prayer with God’s desire for them.
Complete the following prayer by filling in the blanks with a name or situation God has placed on your heart: Lord Jesus, hold (fill in the blank) in the strength of your prayer, hold (fill in the blank) in the love of God.
For example, let’s say you feel led to pray for our church. The prayer would be, Lord Jesus, hold Park Ave Church in the strength of your prayer, hold her in the love of God.
Whatever you’re doing and wherever you may find yourself throughout the day, try getting into the habit of breathing this simple prayer of intercession. I think you’ll find yourself praying in cooperation with the One who is already at work on behalf of the person or situation on your heart.
Much love to you, my friends,
Pastor Gregg
P.S. Save the date and mark your calendar to be at church for Sunday Funday on September 10th! To welcome everyone back from the summer, plus anyone thinking about coming (or returning) to Park, we have designed a 45-minute worship service at 10 a.m. followed by a party in the parking lot to meet and talk and have fun with each other. If you’re thinking about inviting a friend, this would be a good Sunday. I have it on good authority that you can even karaoke!
