“If there is no struggle, there can be no progress,” said Frederick Douglass. His words have been echoing in my heart over the last couple of days since the election on Tuesday.
As I reflect on his wisdom, I’m reminded of the prophet Micah’s words, calling us to the steady, faithful work of justice: “The Lord has shown you, O mortal, what is good and what the Lord requires of you: to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.”
What God asks of us today is no different from what was asked yesterday, and it will remain the same tomorrow. Nothing has changed in that regard. So, we keep doing justice, continue to faithfully love in kindness and mercy, and we don’t stop walking with God in humility, remembering that struggle and progress are woven together. They always have been and always will be.
Now that we’re in this post-election season, let me offer you two ways to continue processing all we’ve been through.
First, I hope you’ll join us this Sunday for the fourth and final message in our Faith & Politics series. Curtiss DeYoung will be wrapping up the series, and we’ll have the opportunity to learn from the wisdom he’s gained through his dedicated work of doing justice.
If you missed any of the important messages thus far, you can catch up here. Each is a gift to our community.
Second, Pastor Jennifer, our minister of spiritual care and formation, sent a wonderful post-election message and prayer to our care team, hospitality ministry, prayer ministry, and small group leaders yesterday. Her words are deeply relevant to our entire congregation, and I believe you’ll find her message very helpful. You can listen here.
Much love,
Pastor Gregg
