This week, I’m remembering George Floyd. Saturday, May 25, marks four years since Mr. Floyd was killed by a police officer just six blocks from the church, a national and international tipping point for racial justice. And related to that, I’m remembering something else. Since we love and worship the One who is committed to reconciling the world and calls us to continue to do justice and be ministers of reconciliation (Micah 6:8; 1 Cor. 5:18), not only must we remember that the work goes on, we must remember that we are part of that ongoing work. Me, you, and all of us together, in ways big and small, are swept up in God’s work of shalom in this world. If you follow Jesus, well, this is the kind of thing you’ve signed up for.
If you haven’t been to George Floyd Square at 38th and Chicago in a while, you might consider attending the Rise & Remember event on Saturday afternoon to support the work of racial justice (find more info here). Beginning at 2 PM and throughout the afternoon, free wellness services will be offered. The event concludes at 7 PM with a candlelight vigil to remember George Floyd. You are welcome to park in the church parking lot.
I believe it was Jim Wallis who said that the foundation of all human rights, equality, and dignity is all of us being created in the image of God.
Indeed.
May we remember to see each other through the lens of Imago Dei.
Much love,
Pastor Gregg
P.S. Just a heads up. In June and July, I take a summer break from publishing my Weekly Word. I’ll pick it up again in August.
