The Risk of Being Woke

By May 4, 2023No Comments

Two things today.

First, save the date! On Sunday, June 11, we will help launch the new book, The Risk of Being Woke, written by our very own Rev. Dr. Curtiss DeYoung. Several of the book’s sermons were first preached at our church. Curtiss will preach at the service and be on hand following the service for signing. Hard copies of the book will be available to purchase for $20.

In case you didn’t know, Curtiss is the Minnesota Council of Churches (MCC) CEO. Prior to MCC, he was Executive Director of the Community Renewal Society in Chicago and Professor of Reconciliation Studies at Bethel University in Saint Paul. He has degrees from the University of Saint Thomas, Howard University, and Anderson University. Curtiss and Karen are long-time members of Park Avenue church.

About the book:

The Risk of Being Woke: Sermonic Reflections for Activists is a 21st-century call to embrace racial justice action, live in beloved community and seek refreshing mystic moments as we emerge from a health pandemic and engage in a racial reckoning. Read more …

Second, our strategic priorities. As you’ve probably heard, a couple of weeks ago, we announced our board-approved strategic priorities for 2023-2026. Now, on our website (on the page called Our Call), you can find out more about each priority. A lot of voices spoke into the process of developing these priorities, and a lot of work went into discovering them. I’m really proud of our church for all of it. The next step is to operationalize our strategic priorities to make sure we intentionally put them into practice in the life of our church.

If you’d like to learn more, Joani Essenburg will hold one more listening session after church this Sunday. Join her in the church office on the upper level. Read more about our strategic priorities …

Looking forward to worshiping with you on Sunday!

Much love to you, my friends,

Pastor Gregg
