Just checking in

Last Sunday, I suggested our honest questions to (or about) God, faith, Jesus, Scripture – and how all of this intersects our often-messy lives – are not an obstacle to faith but an essential ingredient for faith, hope, and love to grow and thrive. Asking honest questions of the heart about these things paves the way to trusting God more, not less, and is one of the most important tools we have in the discipleship toolbox.

The truth is Jesus encourages a relationship of honest asking with a God of determined love. I guess you could say he summed up his view of faith questions when he said,

Ask, and it will be given to you;

search, and you will find;

knock, and the door will be opened for you (Luke 11.9-10).

If you have a question of the heart, write it down and live the question this week by doing three things:

1. Ask God your question. Make it a matter of prayer over the coming days, listening with your heart to how the Spirit of God is responding to you.

2. Open the Bible. Take your question to the scripture to see what insight you might gain.

3. Talk to a friend. Having a conversation about your question with a trusted companion can help you feel not so alone in your wonderings.

And remember this promise: Everyone who asks receives, everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

This Sunday, we’ll continue the Questions of the Heart series by looking at the question on John the Baptist’s heart, “Are you the one we’ve been expecting, or should we look for someone else?”

Much love to you,

Pastor Gregg
